We had to do one more self-portrait for our painting class, this time trying to make it somewhat abstract. I didn't really do a good job (does picking weird colors count as abstraction?) but then we did an abstract painting in class which I think I did a little better with.
We learned the distinction between "abstract" and "non-representational" paintings (which we are doing next). If there's a canvas with random splatters all over it, that's NOT an abstract painting. Abstract painting is still a painting of something in the world, it's just been altered, or "abstracted." I learn something every day in this program!
