For our next series of drawings and analyses we were allowed to select our own painting by one of the "old masters." Our teacher suggest we go the Met to pick up a nice print, but when I got there, they only had one print by an artist on the list.
So I had to do a drawing of this painting ("The Harvesters" by Pieter Bruegel "The Elder" - 1565) which was SO HORRIBLY TEDIOUS YOU WOULDN'T EVEN BELIEVE IT. The level of detail in this painting is completely awe-inspiring. There are over THIRTY figures in there.
Anyways, I was up all night with it. I got two hours of sleep before going to class the next day, where we were then told to flip over our print and our drawing and then take out a fresh piece of paper and redraw the whole scene FROM MEMORY!!?!
After staring at it all night, I was pretty amazed that I could remember as much as I could. After 15 minutes of drawing we got to look at the painting for another 5 minutes to go back and fix things, but for me it was mostly compositional lines, I pretty much GOT all of the little figures and stuff. Crazy!
