Return of the Rentals!

Sat 8/5/2006

I JUST got back from seeing The Rentals. It was quite possibly one of the best live shows I've ever seen.

For those of you that don't know, The Rentals started as a side-project fronted by the original Weezer bassist, Matt Sharp. After Pinkerton, Matt quit Weezer to focus solely on The Rentals, which was unfortunate because their second album totally bombed and the band broke up. Then, 8 years later, they reformed (with a few new members) and are on tour again.

Ozma opened, which was rad (because they opened for Weezer back in 2001). And before they left the stage, Matt Sharp and Rachel Haden came out to sing "California" which is my FAVORITE Rentals song. This was ESPECIALLY fantastic, because on the second Rentals album ("7 more minutes") they BASTARDIZED the song by changing the lyrics to "Barcelona" and totally over-producing the life and soul out of it. So they won major points from me for playing the original.

Then after a long break The Rentals finally took the stage. I gotta say, I was a little nervous... Only about half of the original seven members were in the band. But man. They just totally rocked. It was one of the tightest bands I've ever seen! So many Rentals songs really rely on tight vocal harmonies and they just NAILED them. There were new arrangements of old songs which sounded great and they did all of their B-sides as well. They also played "I Just Threw Out The Love Of My Dreams" with Rachel Haden on vocals (just like on the Weezer track!) which totally made my night.

Anyways, I know I'm being a total dork, but it was just really great. Matt came out at the end and said how awesome it was that we were there when they didn't even have anything new to promote. He said, "We're going to play our last four shows and then go home and make the third album, so we'll see you again real soon!" And all I can say is that after hearing them play tonight, I know the third Rentals album is going to RULE!!!

WOOOO!!!! Yeah the Rentals rocked so hard! I was jumping up and down and singing along like a maniac. My friend Adam caught the frisbee that Matt Sharp threw out into the audience and apparently he's friends with the girl who was brought on stage at the end. I most loved how they flawlessy integrated "Walk on the Wild Side" with "Friends of P". Amazing!

Yeah Liz!!! I'm bummed I didn't see you there. Thanks so much for telling me about the show, I had a BLAST!

Hey Alec!
They're accepting comic and sequential art submissions for a show at ironworks, I thought this would be up your alley...

Oh, thanks Ajani! Unfortunately, it looks like the show goes up on the 18th and I just got to Seattle, where I will still be on that date. Ah well... next time! If you go, let me know how it is!

Oh, man that sounds so awesome.
The first Rentals album is still one of my all time favorites. I'd love for them to record something that is a worthy follup. Becuase the second album never really hit me.
