AWESOME / BW 3.1 / Weezer Demos

Thu 10/18/2007

I have three things I want to blog about, but they are all totally unrelated... Oh well! Here goes anyways:

1) The comics-partying fun doesn't stop with SPX! There is a big book release party for the AWESOME Anthology tomorrow night (Friday Oct. 19th) at Rocketship in Brooklyn. I am going to be there, along with Liz Baillie, Raina Telgemeier, Dave Roman, Nick Bertozzi, and a whole slew of other super-talented cartoonists who are in the book!

For those of you that don't know, this anthology was put together as a benefit for Indie Spinner Rack (who are desperately in need of some new equipment) and The Center For Cartoon Studies (to help with a scholarship for the school). So even if you can't make it to the show, please pick up the book!

2) A lot of people at SPX were kind of bummed to see that the new Phase 7 was not the next chapter of Basewood. All I could say was, "I'm working on it!"

Now, I usually post a small excerpt of my next issue over in the comics section but I thought since this one is going to take me SO LONG, I would post one page at a time, until all eight pages of the excerpt are up. So I've posted the first page of Basewood Chapter Three if anyone wants to see why it is taking me so long.

Sorry the image quality is so bad, but the pages are too big to scan! (It is REALLY NICE drawing big again). I'll let everyone know when the next page goes up...

3) Rivers Cuomo posted a very short (and VERY exciting) blog entry over on his myspace page:

I've compiled a CD of my favorite demos from the years 1992 to 2007 and Geffen Records has agreed to put it out this December, on the eleventh. I hope you enjoy it. I may also be able to put out more demo CDs in the near future.

Rivers is one of those true musical geniuses, like They Might Be Giants, who writes like a song a day. At one point he posted his entire database of every song he had ever written on his (now-defunct) website. And it was literally THOUSANDS of songs. A few of his demos have leaked out over the years (I have over 11 hours of Weezer mp3s) and some of them are really incredible, especially when you consider that Rivers is multitracking all of the parts. But some of them have never been heard, especially the "Black Hole" demos which Rivers wrote in between The Blue Album and Pinkerton. I can not wait to hear this collection of songs, and hope that there will be plenty of demos from "the good ol' days."

that page looks so amazing! i can't beleive how much detail you are putting into all these pages. i can't wait to read this.

i just had the weirdest (but great!) experience...i've been driving down this road near my school for like 2 years and today i decided to turn down a side road i've never gone down...their was a comic shop there i never even knew existed, so i go in, and they had PHASE 7!! in a bigger size than the ones i have, their huge! the same size as the comics journal...i bought 2 of them, and now i realize i have to go back and get the rest because the Basewood pages look AMAZING AT THAT SIZE!!!!!
Alec, why did you reduce the size?...make them big again and charge more...PLEASE!!

Not to worry Jason, the first printing of Basewood is always that bigger size (and the final book will probably be too). Unfortunately, it is too expensive to keep the subsequent printings that size, so I shrink them down. But I also knock off a dollar when I do!

Was it Samurai Comics???

Alec Oct18 was Ash Ave. Comics and Books...
it's easily the best comic store i've ever been in...LOADS of indie stuff...i feel like such a dork for never having known it was's literally a block away from school...
you'll have to get them to re-stock the Phase 7's ...when i go back there won't be anymore left...
