Indie Comics Halloween!

Wed 10/31/2007

I don't know when it happened, but at some point I became a total grump about Halloween. As a kid, I don't think I was ever very excited about getting dressed up, and now that I'm more "adult-ish" I definitely do not participate.

Last weekend though, a group of my comics friends and I went to a Halloween party at Jason Little's house. Julia and I both totally chickened out, but Aaron made what is quite possibly the coolest Halloween costume I have EVER seen.

As you can see above, he dressed up as the amnesiac "Snipper Sniper" from Kaz Strzepek's Mourning Star comic book. (More photos of the costume over on Sarah Glidden's Flickr Account)

Then, a few days later Aaron got an email from Chicago cartoonist Laura Park showing off HER halloween mask, which is Turnip's food sculpture of Viola from the opening scene of his book Spiral Bound (?!?!!!)

It's hard to describe how awesome these costumes make me feel... I mean, it is SUCH an inside joke (probably only a few hardcore people will really "get it") but HOW COOL is it for one cartoonist friend to dress up as another cartoonist friend's character??? (SO COOL!) It almost makes me want to try and join in the fun next year. But who's character would I be? Hmmm...

Anyways, I got the keys to the new apartment last night!!! It is all cleared out and ready for me and the GCB. It was a really nice night, so I dumped my stuff and took a ten minute walk around the neighborhood. In that short amount of time I was able to walk all around McCarren Park and then down to the East River (and one of the most breathtaking views of Manhattan I have ever seen). I came back and sat in the big empty work room, under my new window, and drew in my sketchbook for a while. I think it is going to be really really great to live there with Gabe. :)

Oh! Also, I went up to Queens the other night and recorded two SPX-wrap up episodes of Indie Spinner Rack which was a total blast. The first one is already up and then next one should be up by next week, so if you missed SPX you can get the low-down on some of the great books that were there (and also hear me FREAK OUT about meeting Jeff Smith!)

I'm surprised that with your theater background (tech though it may be) and enthusiasm for various characters that you aren't more of a halloween fan. Ah, well.

Thanks for the mention on ISR! I stayed up far too late listening to it.

Hey Alec,

My jaw hit the floor when I heard you mention my book on the first ISR SPX wrap-up. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! Your episodes on ISR are my favorite anyway, but it meant so much to me to have you review Ivy. I had a great time hanging out with you while I was on the east coast, so if you're ever in my neck of the woods get in touch. Forthcoming: I will send you an actual PAPER LETTER in the MAIL, perhaps with a pinup?

You are the heart and soul of minicomics!
