HANGING OUT WITH JEFF SMITH

Tue 2/26/2008

Okay, okay, I lied! ONE more post before I head out the door!

Remember a few weeks ago, when I said I had REALLY EXCITING NEWS that I couldn't talk about??? Well, I can finally talk about it!

A month or so ago, Charlie and Phil asked me to come on another episode of Indie Spinner Rack which they told me was going to be the "minicomics show." We were going to talk about how to make a minicomic, how to distribute them, etc. etc. They told me we would be calling some other self-publishers and that I should get to Charlie's studio by 3pm on a Saturday.

Well, the Saturday came and at 2pm I left the apartment, only to find that the L train was COMPLETELY screwed up because of weekend construction. There were THOUSANDS of people on the train platform and no trains in sight. So I went back above ground, called Charlie and told him I would be a little late. I hopped on my bike and rode to Union Square (the first time I've ever ridden my bike IN New York City!) I got there by 3pm.

I called Charlie again and gave him a new ETA and then I hopped on the R train and went out to Queens. When I finally got to Charlie's stop I was 30 minutes late. I HATE being late! So I ran the three blocks to his building and up the four flights of stairs, only to find that

THEY WERE INTERVIEWING JEFF SMITH!!! (??!)

Oh man... It was one of the coolest surprises of my life. Suddenly, unexpectedly I got to spend the next two hours sitting on a couch with my ALL-TIME COMICS HERO, asking him anything I liked about his comics! What an honor!!!

Well, it's going to be a 2-part interview, and I only show up in the last 3 minutes of this installment, but it is SUCH a great interview and Jeff talks about so much interesting stuff, you've got to listen to Part 1. I'll post an update when Part 2 goes up, which will hopefully be soon!

The REALLY cool part, is that the next day Charlie and I went to hear a talk Jeff gave at Symphony Space and afterwards we got to hang out with him and grab some lunch. It was so so great. (There were like 200 kids, ALL mega-pumped about Bone!)

At one point, after the talk, while Jeff was signing books, we were waiting for him and I was drawing in my sketchbook. This little girl came up to me and said, "Wow! You are so good at drawing! What are you doing here? Are you a cartoonist too?" And, surprised, DELIGHTED, to hear the words come out of my mouth, I said, "Uh... I guess... I'm... friends with Jeff? And when he's done signing books, we're going to go get some lunch!" She thought that was pretty cool.

I thought that was REALLY cool.

This was seriously a dream come true for me. I can't say that I completely "kept my cool" during the interview. There will be plenty of gushing in part 2... but that's how it goes I guess. Jeff was so cool, so down to earth. He is quite literally the nicest guy in Comics. All of the success he has enjoyed is well earned and could not happen to a more deserving person.

Thank you Charlie and Phil for making this possible! I am so lucky to have you guys as friends!!!

UPDATE: Part 2 is now online!

i always catch your blog on posting i really want to comment on. it's happened again.

i saw you that day you biked into manhattan to union square! it's funny to see you write the circumstances of that event. you had this really intense look on your face as we walked passed eachother and i thought it better to not interrupt your reverie with idle small talk.

now i know that face was: i hate being late! and would soon be replaced with: holy crap my hero! glad it had a happy ending :)

well, congratulations Alec, I may have made you cry with my Jimmy Eat World drawing, but you've made tears well up in my eyes with your admiration of Jeff Smith (tears of happy for you, of course).
