R.I.P. Ferris Longstreth

Fri 2/20/2009

My dog died yesterday.

I've tried three different times to write this post, but I guess I just don't know what to say about it. I am really, really sad.

He was getting pretty old, I guess. When I was home at Christmas, I had the thought that it might be the last time I saw him. I remember sitting in the laundry room with him in the dark, petting his ears, and thinking that it is so strange and wonderful that we have these other animals walking around in our homes, and that we become so attached to them.

If you've ever had a dog, you know what I'm talking about. If you've never had a dog, you should read King-Cat Comics and Stories #38 (which is printed in its entirety in the King-Cat Classix collection from D&Q). Or maybe we should all read that one. Mr. Porcellino said it better than I can right here.

It's been a pretty crappy week all around, truth be told. Tuesday morning my computer wouldn't turn on (AGAIN - the FOURTH time this has happened) only this time, none of the tricks Gabe taught me would work. I'm under quite a bit of deadline pressure at the moment, and so after a few extremely stressful hours of hemming and hawing, I bit the bullet and bought a new iMac, at great expense (UGH). Then that afternoon was when my Mom called me to say that Ferris had had some sort of seizure, and that he couldn't use his back legs any more.

His condition got worse and worse, and eventually my parents had him "put down." Somehow it doesn't seem real. Like, it won't REALLY hit me until the next time I go back and Ferris isn't there to welcome me home.

Oh well, I guess these things happen... I think Ferris had a pretty good life with our family. He got to play in the woods and run around up at the fields. He was a good dog. I'll miss him.

Condolences Alec. He looks like a great dog. I'm sure he loved having you as a friend.

Alec I'm so sorry to hear this. My heartfelt condolences--I live in perpetual fear of something happening to my own dog, and the eventual spectre of his mortality is always present. Which is not to say that I know what you're going through: I don't. Please let me know if there's anything I can do.

Thanks Guys. Dustin, there IS something you can do. Take your dog for a walk man! Scratch him behind the ears for me and throw a ball for him to fetch.

Aw I'm so sorry Alec! I have two dogs myself (one of whom is getting on in years - she's only about 7 but she's very big and already has problems with her hips) and I can't imagine what I'll do when they go. Luckily I get to spend a lot of time with them during the day - they both like to hang out in the sunbeams in the room where I work, or on the dirty laundry on the floor.

Anyway, my heartfelt condolences to you! I'm gonna go feed and walk my pups now - I'll give them both some good belly rubs for you!

i'm so sorry man...

Oh man i tear up just typing this. I have BEEN THERE and feel for you sir. We lost our dog of 12 years not long ago and the house is still filled with pictures of him that stop me in my tracks. But as the days go on I don't stop and look less i just stop and smile more. Again i'm sorry for your family's loss

I'm really sorry to hear about your loss. Losing a friend or family member -whatever the species- can be really hard to deal with. I hope that you can move past the grief soon, and remember what a great time you had with Ferris all these years, I'm sure that's what he'd want you to do. Dogs are like that. Cats would rather you remember the great times they had when you weren't home.
