Exhibits! Exhibits!! EXHIBITS!!!

Wed 1/30/2008

Man! It seems like a whole string of super interesting exhibits and speakers have popped up in the last week or so.... And not all just in New York!

First off, the Society of Illustrators Sequential show is up! I need to get up there and check it out before it's gone...

Secondly, on February 1st there is going to be a big Chris Ware show at the Adam Baumgold gallery. It's going to be a bunch of his originals for the Building Stories series that he did in the New York Times magazine and also a lot of his work for The New Yorker. I'm lucky enough to have seen some of his originals before and they are always awe-inspiring. I can't wait to check it out!

Thirdly, on February 10th JEFF SMITH is coming to New York. He's going to do a moderated talk about BONE, which as many of you know, is my all-time favorite comic. Though I MET HIM (??!) and I have read a few interviews with him, I have never heard him speak. It should be pretty awesome!

Fourthly, today my Mom let me know that there is going to be a big R.Crumb exhibit at the Fry Museum in Seattle. It ends the same weekend as The Stumptown Comics Fest so I'm going to try and roll in to Seattle a day before heading down to Portland so I can check it out!

And last, but DEFINITELY not least, there is going to be a JIM HENSON EXHIBIT AT THE SMITHSONIAN (!!!!?!?!?!???!!!!!) This is in Washington D.C. and similar to the Crumb exhibit, it ends the same weekend as SPX (which is ALSO on my BIRTHDAY!) So I am totally going to get down to D.C. a day early to check that out. I WOULD say this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see some of Jim Henson's original sketches and puppets, but AFTER it leaves the Smithsonian the exhibit is going on TOUR. And during the summer of 2009 it will be in Seattle, at the EMP. So hopefully I can get home that summer and see it for a SECOND time!! :)

I haven't read that entire interview about the Crumb exhibit yet but it seems like there are more than a few sketchy comments therein. Most notably perhaps that "William Burroughs took heroin his whole life..." Didn't he quit drugs before actually sitting down to compile Naked Lunch? I don't know why I am bothering to put a fine point on it.

It's coming to Atlanta, to the Center for Puppetry Arts. Woo!

Holy crap, that website says the exhibit is in Arizona! Now!

Thanks for the heads up - I'm going to catch it before it leaves town...
