I also have a LEFT hand.

Fri 2/4/2005

So my right wrist has been aching for the last few weeks. I'm pretty sure it's because I am drawing ALL THE TIME and also typing a lot at work (imagine how much worse it would be if I wasn't typing DVORAK!!!)

And I don't know if it's just me, but it seems like EVERYWHERE I TURN people are getting carpal tunnel syndrome. My friend Mark S. Williams had it, which prevented him from playing his guitar and piano, Craig Thompson talks about his wrist pain all throughout his newest book "Carnet De Voyage" (he also talks about Rembrandt having completely crippled wrists at the end of his life), Scott Morse made a mini comic all about his wrist wearing down that I got at SPX, I saw some picture of Chuck Close working in his studio with a wrist brace, hell, even the GCB had some wrist trouble last year!

So I am determined to NOT have my wrist give out, or be destroyed. I really LIKE how much I'm drawing right now and don't really want to cut back. So while ruminating about this tonight, the thought occurred to me:

I also have a LEFT hand.

I mean really, what's the deal here? WE HAVE TWO HANDS. Why the hell do we pick ONE HAND and then make it do 99% of the work??? We have two LEGS, but we certainly don't say to ourselves, "Well, I DO have two legs, but I think I'll just hop around on the right one all the time." I mean my LEFT wrist never hurts or feels weak! It's time to put that goddamned hand to work!!!

So starting tonight I have relegated all non-essential tasks to my underused LEFT HAND. Some of these tasks include using the mouse on my computer, eating with utensils, erasing, brushing my teeth, "etc." I've already started and it is kind of slow going, but that is to be expected. In the long run I think it will be WELL WORTH the investment of time and effort. I am planning on drawing for the rest of my life, so I might as well keep my drawing hand in good shape, RIGHT??? (pun intended)

It seems weird that I didn't think of this before. I mean, why not be able to use BOTH of your hands??? It just seems so crazy not to... I'll let you all know how it goes.
