Weezer Warning!!!

Sun 8/16/2009

Last Thursday was a magical day. I got some exercise, I hung out with friends, I ate some good food, I drew a bunch of comics and I even checked a few chores off of my to-do list. Seriously, it was like a perfect summer day.

Then, for whatever reason, I woke up on Friday in a horrible mood. I was being a total grump all day, until finally in the afternoon, I sat down to draw. I was flipping through my music, trying to figure out what I wanted to listen to, and I thought, "WEEZER will cheer me up!" And it DID. I listed to MY version of The Red Album, Pinkerton and then The Blue Album. It was an awesome two hours of rock and roll.

As the last bass notes of "Only In Dreams" were winding down, the thought suddenly crossed my mind, "I wonder what the hell Weezer is UP to these days..." so I headed over to weezer.com, where I discovered that WEEZER IS DONE RECORDING THEIR SEVENTH ALBUM (!!!!!?!?!?!?!)

Now, I don't know how this happened, but somehow, I put the wrong URL for the Weezer RSS feed into my blog reader a few months back. It had been working fine, but then at some point the URL changed and my feed stopped updating. So I go to the site last night and there was literally FOUR MONTHS worth of Weezer updates that I had never seen!

CAN YOU EVEN IMAGINE???

They're on tour! With Josh Freese on Drums?! And Pat on 2nd guitar?? And Rivers is JUST singing?! And they've been in the STUDIO? And THEY'RE ALMOST DONE?? AND THEY'RE MIXING THE TRACKS??? AND THEY'RE LEANING MORE TOWARDS ROCK INSTEAD OF POP???! AND THE SEVENTH ALBUM COMES OUT OCTOBER 27TH????!?!?! AND THE FIRST SINGLE FROM THE ALBUM COMES OUT ON AUGUST 25TH?!?!?!?!?!?

I mean I literally went from being completely in the dark about anything going on in the Weezer World to being TEN DAYS AWAY FROM HEARING THE NEW SINGLE FROM THE SEVENTH WEEZER ALBUM. Holy crap!!!

I spent three hours last night reading through all of Karl's old blog entries, and all of the linked articles and videos and interviews, and I have to say I am pretty god damn pumped about this album. Just the fact that they are releasing another album so quickly after The Red Album is a GREAT sign I think. I've had more time to digest The Red Album now, and I think that it is definitely the 3rd best officially released Weezer album (if one uses MY track listing!) There are some really great songs on there and the band is finally getting back to their Blue Album roots. One post in particular from Karl really got me excited about the seventh album:

As usual, weezer has kept things interesting with new experiments and ideas. After this many albums, its a given that they will try some new theories out. However, one thing thats stayed the same this time is Rivers singing lead.

My main concern about post-Red Album Weezer albums was that the band might spiral off into MORE tracks with Brian and Pat singing lead. Honestly I don't care if they do some more experimentation - I think songs like "Greatest Man" and "The Angel and the One" which don't obey standard verse-chorus structures are really interesting. But for me, as soon as Rivers isn't singing, it stops being Weezer. So the fact that they realized that, and they aren't doing it again, has me seriously hopeful for this next offering.

So ANYWAYS, I'm sorry I let this information slip through the cracks! I'm sure a few of you already knew about this, but I feel responsible for keeping you non-Weezer Fanclub members in the loop with what's going on with THE GREATEST LIVING ROCK BAND ON EARTH.

The new single is called "(If you're wondering if I want you to) I want you to" and I will report back on the 25th as to its rockability. October can't come soon enough!!!

I like it a lot. I don't know if it will fit your specific Weez tastes, but I hope it does!
