Jedi Youth!

Sun 8/23/2009

Today while playing Star Wars: Episode I Pinball, I spelled out J-E-D-I and I BEAT DARTH MAUL, thus achieving the rank of Jedi Youth! I also set the new (human achieved) high score on the machine, with just over 63,500,000 points. (The game came with some pre-loaded high scores at 100,000,000 and 90,000,000 etc.)

More importantly, I feel like I had a real breakthrough with the game today. In the last few days Jon and I have figured out a bit more about how the game operates, including some bonuses you can build up or specific places to aim for. The best new trick is the "skill shot" launch which quickly ups your score and gets you extra balls. But also I realized that the more you play on the same machine, the more you learn how the ball is going to exit certain areas, and you know where it is going to hit the flippers, so you can slow the ball down and exercise greater control.

It's like I've taken my first step into a larger world. ;)

My Flickr pictures of the Episode I Pinball Machine attracted an informative comment from Drew Anderson, alerting me to the existence of the documentary film, TILT: The Battle to Save Pinball, which apparently, is ALL ABOUT the creation of this "Pinball 2000" technology (the combination of Pinball and a holographic video screen at the back of the board) and the tragic demise of the pinball industry. I haven't watched it yet, but it's in my Netflix queue, so I'll report back once I've seen it. It sounds like it'll be right up my alley!

I'll also let you all know when I achieve Jedi Knight status. My next goal is to beat that fake 100,000,000 point robot score. Let's hope the Force is with me!
