Summer Break!

Sun 5/16/2010

Well, as you can see here, CCS graduation was on Saturday. (Photo by Penina!) It was a very moving ceremony for me.

The class of 2010 arrived at this school at the same time I did. I was the Fellow during their first year, and so in a lot of ways I feel like I am PART of this class. I have also worked with them as their teacher, but I've also just become FRIENDS with them. It's really, really sad to think that so many of them will be leaving this community, but if there's anything I've learned in life, it's that I will see them again (and again and again). Also, many of them are staying! Some for the summer, and others for the foreseeable future!

Anyway, so I was sitting there, feeling proud, happy, nostalgic and sad, all at the same time, when Melissa went up to the podium to give out a special gift... TO ME! All of the seniors signed (and made drawings on) a soccer ball for me. It's really wonderful. I already have it hanging in my apartment, on a string, so that it rotates in the breeze from my window, so I can look at ALL of the drawings. Thanks class of 2010, I love you guys.

If I'm sad about the students leaving, I'm absolutely DEVASTATED about Max leaving a week from today. He has been one of my closest friends this year, and he has made so many amazing contributions to the school. I know that I definitely learned a lot from him. Again, I know that we will see each other in the future, but it'll be a bit harder with that stupid Atlantic Ocean inbetween us.

So with graduation over, I guess today was the first day of Summer Break! I have been waiting for this for a long time. My apartment is a total mess. There are receipts everywhere from MoCCA and Stumptown, there are piles of student work and handouts from this semester, not to mention piles of clothes and dishes and shoes and bags and everything else. This place is in serious need of some spring cleaning!

I feel like I should apologize for my slow pace of blogging this year, but I've started to realize how silly that is. Here's why:

1) I have been really busy with teaching this semester. I think you all know that.
2) I read through a lot of my old blog posts, and a large percentage of them are just me venting about stuff, or being frustrated, or sad, or lonely. My life is pretty great right now, so I think I have less to complain about :)
3) I actually AM posting a lot of stuff on the internet, it's just not all going on this site. I hope people are checking out the "Updates" column on my homepage (RSS). I've been posting my Basewood Beard Photos, I set up a Goodreads account where I am reviewing all the books I read, and I'm also using FriendFeed to post random links, thoughts, videos, and stuff that I'm interested in. It's about as close as I'm going to get to "Twitter" so if you're into that, check it out!

Anyway, I've got the whole summer to set my own schedule, so hopefully I can get a CUBIC TON of drawing done on Basewood. I also want to do a lot of reading, and I have some other top secret projects, which I'll reveal in the coming weeks... I only have two trips out of town, one at the very beginning of summer and one at the very end, but I guess I'll post more about those when they happen. For now, I need to clean this apartment and get back to drawing!!!
